About the department:

At Stepney Green our aim is to “Inspire, Challenge and Achieve”. We achieve this by creating a curriculum and extracurricular programme that present students with the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports throughout their curriculum. However, school does not stop at 3-30. Our extracurricular programme gives students the opportunity to specialise and compete in their favourite sports. We are a lead school in Tower Hamlets for organising and competing in inter school Sporting competitions. At Stepney Green students are given the opportunity and support to achieve their Sporting potential.

At Stepney green we take students health very seriously and provide a vast range of physical activity options to all students both in and out of the curriculum. We are currently one of the only Secondary schools in Tower Hamlets to have the Healthy Schools Silver award and are aiming to achieve the Gold award very shortly.

Key stage 3 Curriculum:

Throughout Y7,8 and 9 we offer students a Broad and Balanced curriculum. This provides the opportunity to participate in a wide range of activities including Football, Athletics, Cricket, Basketball, Combat sports, Badminton, Indoor Rowing, Mountain biking, Problem solving, Table Tennis, Handball, Gymnastics, Dance, Tag Rugby and Sports leadership. Throughout this Key stage they will learn how to develop healthy lifestyle habits which they can sustain for life. Students will also learn how to warm up and prepare for physical activity safely. They will lean about the components of fitness and how to train to improve performance. All out year 7 students are given the opportunity to participate in Cycle training.

Key stage 4 Curriculum:

At Key Stage 4 students we offer students 2 main qualification pathways:

1) GCSE PE (EDEXCEL): This is a very popular course and allows students the opportunity to achieve a full GCSE in Physical Education.

2) BTEC level 2 (EDEXCEL): This course provides students with the opportunity to achieve a BTEC Level 2 in Sport.

To find out more about these qualifications, go to: Edexcel website

In Core PE students are presented with a choice / option system in addition to their Core learning units. This gives students the opportunity to pursue a Sport or Physical activity that they are finding more interesting and enjoyable. The purpose of this is to mimic the situation for students when they have left school and to create and embed habits which will form the basis of a life-long healthy, active lifestyle.

Key stage 5 Curriculum:

At Key stage 5 we offer 2 qualification pathways:

1) A Level PE (OCR): This provides the opportunity to learn in depth about Sport whilst giving the opportunity to train and progress in their specialist sports. For more information go to: A Level PE

2) BTEC Level 3 (EDEXCEL): This provides the opportunity to learn in depth about Sport whilst giving the opportunity to train and progress in their specialist sports. For more information go to: BTEC Level 3

In addition, all students are given the opportunity to engage in 100 minutes of Physical activity or sport of their choice with in the overall KS5 Enrichments programme.

Extra-Curricular:

At Stepney Green a wide range of additional opportunities are provided to participate and train in specific Sports. We encourage all students to join at least one club per week to help their healthy growth and development.

The extracurricular programme is published and displayed around the school. All opportunities are open to all students and are completely free of charge. This is available for parents read on the school website:
